Sonatrach

Algerian state-owned energy giant Sonatrach is ramping up efforts to bolster its presence in Libya, identifying the country as a key strategic hub for its investment portfolio.

The company revealed its intentions during the Libya Energy and Economy Summit, where its delegation included Algeria’s ambassador to Libya, Slimane Chenine, and Youssef Khenfer, Sonatrach’s central director for green and renewable energies.

In a statement on its website, Sonatrach announced plans to resume operations in the Ghadames Basin in partnership with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC).

The company fully reinstated its Libyan operations in September 2024, after suspending activities for several years due to security concerns. Sonatrach is now focusing on oil and gas exploration and development in its concession areas, with a strong emphasis on the Ghadames Basin’s potential.
