The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed concern over the armed clashes in the capital, Tripoli, on Thursday, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid escalation or retaliatory actions.

In a statement, UNSMIL condemned the repeated use of violence as a means to settle disputes, as it "gravely endangers civilians and further undermines the fragile security situation", calling for those responsible to be held accountable.

The mission highlighted that the insecurity stems from the political crisis and weakened institutional legitimacy, underscoring the need for Libya to prioritize elections to establish credible governing bodies and ensure adherence to the rule of law.
