Cyrenaica Commission said that Haftar’s speech was a desperate attempt to attain power, on the heels of his obvious military failure to achieve his ambitions on the outskirts of Tripoli.

In a statement, the commission expressed its rejection of any illegal attempt to take power, noting that the silent majority in Cyrenaica i.e. the eastern part of Libya rejects all these “shameful acts”.

The commission also denounced Haftar’s abusive actions of involving young people from Cyrenaica in the war, pitting them against their brothers in the west of the country, adding that this losing war on Tripoli has no objective other than to usurp power.

Warlord Khalifa Haftar declared Monday night the UN-brokered Libyan Political Agreement invalid, saying in a televised address to his supporters that he accepts “the Libyan people’s mandate” to rule the country.
