The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met Sunday evening with the commander of the self-styled army in eastern Libya Khalifa Haftar in Rajma near Benghazi after meeting with the Head of Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sirraj in the morning in Tripoli.

The media office of Haftar’s general command said they had discussed mutual relations and the current status quo in Libya.

Haftar and Conte met in Palermo Conference on November 12-13 and were scheduled for a Rome meeting in late November according to many sources, however; the meeting did not take place.

In Tripoli on Sunday, Conte and Al-Sirraj reviewed cooperation in political, economic and security fields as well as the activation of the friendship agreement between Italy and Libya with working commissions launched in the beginning of 2019.

Italy has been increasing its role in the political process to find a solution for the Libyan crisis and thus wishes a bigger role in the coming National Conference in early 2019, inviting Libyan parties including ex-regime figures as a preparation for the conference.
