The Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah announced on Tuesday contracting the French company Total Energy to begin producing 500 megawatts of electricity via solar energy as part of the government’s strategy to rely on renewable energies.
This announcement came during a speech by Dbeibah at the fourth engineering conference of the Syndicate of Engineering Professions in Al-Zawiya, where he mentioned the government’s adoption the national strategy for renewable energies and energy efficiency for the years 2023 to 2035 - a project in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and in partnership with a specialized team from the US Agency for International Development, the General Electricity Company, and the Renewable Energy Agency.
Dbeibah said that a number of agreements were signed that could export solar energy to Malta, Italy and Greece, considering that this path is the future of the world.
Last week, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Electricity Company, Mohamed Al-Mashai, discussed with the Regional Director of Total a project to produce 500 megawatts of solar energy, which will be the first environment-friendly alternative energy project in Libya.
Total's Regional Director expressed the company's readiness to begin construction of the project and implement it within a timetable agreed upon with the electricity company, while expanding into other projects according to specific plans.
