Al-Manqoush-US official

Counselor of the US Department of State Derek Chollet has reiterated Washington's rejection of the attempts to seize power by force in Niger during a phone call with Libya's Foreign Minister Najla Al-Manqoush on Friday.

"The U.S. shares Libya’s concern that these events could destabilize the region, particularly as Libya is in the midst of a delicate UN-facilitated political process aimed at unifying the country through free and fair elections," the US diplomat tweeted.

Chollet called for a restoration of constitutional order in Niami, indicating that the US partnership with Niger is based on a shared commitment to democratic governance.

Libya's Foreign Ministry quoted the US officials as saying that his country would send a clear message through the Security Council to affirm its rejection of the effort in Niamey to seize power by force and its support for the democratic path.

The statement said the two sides shared concerns over the repercussions of the deteriorating security situation in Niger on the region, including the stability of Libya.
