The Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah said the recent decisions of the House of Representatives (HoR) showed chaos and lack of transparency as well as integrity, adding that what happened last Thursday at the HoR – mainly appointing a replacement to Dbeibah as PM (Fathi Bashagha) – was a mess.

Dbeibah said at a “Elders and Mayors of West Coast and Mountain Regions’ Municipalities for Reconciliation” in Regdaline town that what happened at the HoR last Thursday was “a farce” and all HoR members must be “sacked”, saying the HoR and other politicians and political entities have been controlling Libya for 10 years and have always been afraid for their powerful positions, thus opting for extending their mandates as they are afraid of elections, saying the current conflict in Libya is political.

Dbeibah indicated that there will be no Libya without a real reconciliation among all Libyans, adding that the solution in Libya is through the holding of elections and the rejection of extension of mandate for the same parties, and reiterating that he had started talking to “national parties” to hold elections in June 2022.

“All indications say we can hold elections and constitutional referendum on one day (same date) and this plan (Return of Trust to People) will be announced on February 17. Libyans should take to the streets and demonstrate in demand of holding elections.” Dbeibah added.

On Thursday, the HoR named Fathi Bashagha as new Prime Minister to replace Dbeibah and gave him 15 days to present his cabinet. Bashagha arrived in Tripoli and said he expected Dbeibah and his government to respect democracy and hand over power, but Dbeibah had contested the HoR decision and said he would remain in power until elections are held.
