US State Department spokesman Ned Price has reaffirmed the UN Security Council's support for Abdoulaye Bathily's initiative.

Tweeting on Friday, the US official said the UN envoy's new roadmap offers Libyan leaders the best chance to end the turmoil and secure legitimacy through elections.

"We urge Libyan leaders to work with the SRSG to build on progress and conclude an agreement for a stable and democratic future."

His comments came a day after US Ambassador Richard Norland said that Bathily's initiative was the result of in-depth consultations with Libyan politicians and international parties.

Speaking to Al-Jazeera Mubasher Thursday, Norland indicated that the new roadmap is based on mobilizing international efforts and bringing together key actors to hold elections.

He stressed the importance of reaching an agreement on a constitutional basis for holding elections, which "results are respected by the winner and the losers."

"There is no external solution that can be imposed on the Libyans," Norland added, acknowledging that the Libyan people alone have the right to determine the criteria for running in the presidential elections.
