The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that it is deeply disturbed by recent reports of attacks on health care facilities in Libya.
The organization said in a statement that hospitals and health centers in Tripoli were attacked during widespread violence in the capital on August 26 and 27, while dozens of civilians were killed and injured, and ambulance teams in some areas were unable to assist them due to fierce fighting.
WHO Representative in Libya, Elizabeth Hoff, stressed the need to protect health facilities across Libya to allow them to provide care for all in a safe environment.
She reminded all parties to the conflict of their obligations to refrain from attacking medical facilities and personnel in accordance with international human rights and humanitarian law.
WHO recalled that since the beginning of 2022, 8 attacks on health care facilities have been reported in Libya, explaining that this violates international humanitarian law and deprives vulnerable people of medical treatment at a time when they need it most.
