The governor of Tripoli-based Central Bank of Libya (CBL) Al-Siddiq Al-Kabeer met Monday in Tunisia’s UNSMIL headquarters with the governor of parallel CBL in Al-Bayda, Ali Al-Hibri.
UNSMIL said the meeting was brokered by the head of the mission Ghassan Salame, adding that they reviewed the CBLs’ work and the meeting was positive.
The Presidential Council asked the UN Security Council to form a technical commission to check the income and spending of the CBLs, to which both agreed.
Since 2014 when the House of Representatives decided to sack Al-Kabeer and appoint a new governor in Al-Bayda, Tripoli and Al-Bayda CBLs have been each claiming legitimacy for its own side.
However, international organizations and community did not recognize such a move by the HoR and remained in full commitment to dealing with the Tripoli-based CBL, despite the fact that Libya’s financial institutions have been split and expenditure hence rocketed.
In the meantime, the Presidential Council backed by the international community has been trying to unify the two CBLs since it entered Tripoli in 2016, yet all efforts have brought little significance amid inflexibility and exchanges of accusations of supporting armed groups in the current conflict.
