The British newspaper ‘The Independent’, said that France’s policy regarding Libya is finally subject to internal scrutiny, adding that Paris has, for several years now, played a vital role in the rise of Haftar, by providing diplomatic support and cover.

The newspaper also pointed out that there appears to be a sudden shift after Haftar’s disastrous defeat in western Libya, indicating that some politicians within the French Foreign Ministry of Affairs and the security services have begun to back down regarding support for Haftar.

The Independent quoted a well-informed French official, familiar with French policy on Libya, as saying that there is a state of deep frustration within French circles regarding the situation which has evolved in Libya.
