The United Nations and African and European Union missions in Libya have welcomed the progress made through the voluntary return program of illegal immigrants.

In a joint statement, the international missions stressed the need to improve the conditions of migrants and refugees in detention centers, including the empowerment of United Nations agencies and humanitarian actors, and called on the Libyan authorities to take practical steps to facilitate the deportations of refugees.

The UN, AU and EU missions expressed their continued support for the Libyan authorities in their efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration.

According to the statement, the missions urged that a gradual solution to arbitrary detention be put in place, and to avoid the detention of children and other vulnerable individuals, and to work on the future closure of detention centers.
