A senior commander from the Kaniyat militia has been arrested in Libya on charges of killing 59 people, the country’s Attorney General’s office has announced.
In a statement on Facebook, prosecutors said the suspect allegedly oversaw the killings while managing a detention facility linked to the Judicial Police.
He is accused of unlawfully detaining 58 individuals who were later killed and of participating in the hanging of another victim after kidnapping him.
The Kaniyat militia was a key ally of Khalifa Haftar during his offensive on Tripoli in 2019–2020 and has been accused of committing mass killings in areas under its control. Authorities have begun legal proceedings to bring the suspect to trial.
