More than 22 international relief organizations and academics have called on the Maltese government to stop deporting illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean and forcibly sending them to Libya, noting the violations they are exposed to at detention centers in Libya.

The statement added: “The dire situation of migrants and asylum seekers residing inside Libya is well documented by United Nations observers and experts,” calling for an investigation into allegations of the forcible return of 83 migrants to Libya, in an incident recorded by the “Phone Alert System” last week.

In a joint statement, the organizations expressed, “deep concern over reports claiming that the Maltese authorities somehow allowed the Libyan Coast Guard into Malta’s search and rescue area with the aim of returning irregular migrants to Libya,” according to the Times of Malta.
