The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has accepted the resignation of his Special Representative, Head of the United Nations Mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, which he announced on Tuesday.

Guterres thanked Bathily for his efforts to restore peace and stability to Libya, and reiterated the United Nations' commitment to continue to support the Libyan-led and owned political process, according to a statement issued by the spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric.

On Tuesday, Bathily announced his resignation, considering that the United Nations could not move successfully in support of a political process, in the face of leaders who put their personal interests above the country’s needs.
