The Head of the media office of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) Adam Mabrouk, confirmed the return of the power to southern Libya after 15 successive days of outage.

“The return took place after the reopening of the gas pipeline that feeds Al-Zawiya power plant.” He added.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, Al-Mabrouk added that the southern region will now see a policy of five hours of load shedding followed by five hours of power until the electricity network is stable.

He indicated that the current reason behind the power outage in the south is the damage, caused by vandalism acts, of the power transfer cables between Hun and Samno districts, saying the hours of power in the region will be increased only after the damage is repaired.

Al-Mabrouk also said that Ubari power plant needs operation only and the operation would take no more than two months as the Turkish company that did the project is still prolonging the process despite giving it all of its demands.

“Many deaths were caused by the power outage, especially among children, and because of the outage all living conditions took a halt.” He concluded, saying if the power outage lingered longer in the south, it would have worsened the situation deeper.
