The Steering Committee of the Benghazi Municipality - a committee based in Tripoli to manage the affairs of the displaced people of the eastern region - expressed its categorical rejection of the invitation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to hold a meeting in Cairo to discuss national reconciliation, describing this step as an “unacceptable violation of the legal and institutional frameworks.”
The committee argued in a statement on Sunday that national reconciliation is a sovereign issue that should not be subject to political bargaining or narrow factional interests, pointing out that there is a conflict between Aqila Saleh and his son Al-Siddiq , regarding the reconciliation file, in order to settle the issue of the displaced people of Benghazi and the eastern region in a way that serves the political future of each of them.
The committee also called for the release of all detainees in connection with “Operation Dignity” and the lifting of security restrictions imposed on its opponents, demanding the implementation of a program to return the properties of the displaced people of Benghazi and the eastern region.
It stressed the need for the UN mission to abide by its responsibilities toward implementing the outcomes of Geneva, noting that national reconciliation is an inherent right of all Libyans and that the Presidential Council is tasked with managing it. The committee warned against turning reconciliation into a project that serves private agendas or a means of settling political scores, calling for the activation of the transitional justice project and the formation of the Supreme National Commission for Reconciliation.
