A bushfire broke out in the Green Mountain forests on Saturday in the area between Kirissah and Athrun towns in the east part of the country, causing irreplaceable loss to the forest cover in Libya, according to Alhaya Organization for Protection of Wildlife and Marine Organisms.

On its Facebook page, the organization called on officials to take immediate measures to control the fires in order to preserve the remaining forests of the Green Mountain, one of the few forested areas in Libya, which is estimated at 1% of the country's territory.

The organization questioned the fate of the budget allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture in 2013 for the purchase of five firefighting aircraft, according to information it had obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture in that period.

The Green Mountain Forests are one of the unique types of forests noted for its abundance of distinctive flora, including the Phoenician tree, one of the most important, irreplaceable ingredient of land cover in the area, accounting for 70% of the total number of evergreen trees and shrubs in the Green Mountain.
