A new report from the Libyan Crimes Watch has detailed a series of grave human rights violations committed in December 2024. The abuses, attributed to security forces, military groups, and armed factions, come amidst what the institution describes as "clear inaction" by Libyan authorities in both the east and west.

Among the most shocking cases was the death of Adel Al-Werfalli, 44, who succumbed to injuries after being tortured in detention by the General Information and Investigations Department in the Haftar-controlled Ajdabiya. Al-Werfalli was hospitalized for brain hemorrhaging on December 6 but died nine days later.

The report also highlighted arbitrary detentions, including that of human rights activist Haitham Al-Werfalli in Benghazi. Al-Werfalli was released after four days without legal proceedings. Another detainee, Muath Al-Hashemi, was held for ten days by armed personnel linked to the Government of National Unity before being freed.

The organization also documented the death of a 64-year-old Syrian migrant, who was reportedly tortured during his detention in eastern Libya. He succumbed to his injuries after being released on December 20, following nearly a month in custody.

The report warns these documented cases may only represent a fraction of the violations committed, calling for urgent action to address the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.
