Libya's Ambassador to Italy, Muhannad Younis, has called on the Italian government to continue its support for achieving stability in Libya.

Ambassador Younis was delivering a speech at an energy conference in Rome when he made his remarks, says the Italian Nova news agency.

"Libya hopes the Italian government will increase its constructive cooperation to achieve stability and development in the country," the news agency quoted Younis as saying.

He said that Italy has tried, throughout the previous governments in Libya, to help on the track to elections, "but the Italian position in the past was framed in the European or international context."

Younis urged the present Italian administration to play a more effective role in helping the Libyan people achieve stability and elections in response to the aspiration of the Libyan people to choose their rulers democratically and end more than a decade of transitional stages, as he put it.
