It was back to school for students in the western region of Libya, as the Education Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) set the 2nd of January as the date for the start of the new academic year of 2020-2021.

Classroom teaching started Saturday morning for primary pupils while lower secondary students will attend school on the 23rd of the same month, officials said.

The Ministry of Education announced last November its plan for the new academic year, which will be implemented under the supervision of special committees formed to follow up on the course of the study.

The academic year will last 24 weeks with no mid-term or end-of-semester exams, but instead, pupils will be tested at the end of each school day.

According to the new plan, students will only attend the school when studying subjects that require teachers' assistance, while other topics will be delivered via educational platforms, with questions placed at the end of each chapter.

Schools in Libya remained closed during the academic year 2019-2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
