A Ugandan recruitment firm has been approached by a hospital in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi to hire up to 1200 medical workers.
Middle East Consultants Limited (MEC) says it has received more 1500 applications in response to a job advert on a local TV station. According to the advert, the salary ranges from 3.5 - 7 Millions UGX per month.
The move was criticized by Ugandan health activists who believe it would further weaken the health care system, but the poor conditions in Uganda’s health sector have been cited as the main reason why medical workers leave the country for greener pastures abroad.
A video posted by MEC showed hundreds of applicants waiting for an interview.
According to Ugandan media, the Libyans have asked for doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians to work for the country’s second largest city, which was ravaged by conflict. It’s understood that the Libyan hospital, which was not named, is in dire need of medical workers, especially after the departure of most of Filipino medical workers.
There was no official announcement from the health ministry of the eastern Libyan government led by Abdullah Al-Thanni.
