The Court of Appeal in Al-Bayda, east of Libya, on Monday, sentenced five people to life imprisonment over their links to human trafficking activities.

The court prosecuted 37 defendants for the lives of 11 migrants who drowned at sea in an illegal migration journey.

Nine other defendants received 15 years imprisonment, while the rest were sentenced to one year.

The Public Prosecutor's Office said the defendants caused the drowning of 11 migrants who were among 37 others sailing on a rickety boat towards Europe.
