Amnesty International has considered that Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy for the presidential elections reflects an atmosphere of total impunity within Libya, noting that he is, in fact, wanted for investigation for crimes against humanity.

Amnesty stated in a tweet on Monday that Gaddafi’s son had a role in the violent suppression of the demonstrations against his father’s rule in February 2011, and must, in the name of justice, be handed over to the International Criminal Court to be dealt with according to the law.

It added, “It is time to end impunity for those suspected of crimes under international law, or indeed their presence in positions of authority in Libya, just like Al-Tuhamy Khaled and Mahmoud Al-Warfalli, who were also wanted by the International Criminal Court, however, died prior to their being brought to justice, in 2021, whilst they still enjoyed freedom within the country.”
