The Chairman of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, has confirmed that the HNEC is 70% operationally and logistically ready to hold elections in 2024.
Al-Sayeh added in a press statement that the remainder of the readiness rate depends on what is stated in the electoral laws, stressing that there must be one government that bears responsibility for logistical and security supervision of the electoral process, and indicating that the HNEC didn't have any substantive observations on the electoral laws.
Al-Sayeh pointed out that the success of international efforts to hold elections this year depends on the political parties’ acceptance of them, saying that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy for the presidential elections will be decided by the judiciary.
He also pointed out that the electoral process depends on how serious the new government, if formed, is in its support of the elections, explaining that the whole matter revolves around this government, which must adhere to its assigned tasks and support the HNEC.
