Former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has called for establishing a refugee reception camps in North Africa, and for a military operation to dismantle what he called "the suspicious refugee camps in Libya."

In statements to the German newspaper "Welt am Sonntag" on Sunday, Gabriel said "We are in need for an asylum centre on the African Mediterranean coast."

He added that a German ambassador - which he did not name - talked about similar conditions for current camps in Libya to those of the Nazi concentration camps, stressing that the Europeans should no longer accept the current situation.
