The Libyan embassy in Rome has confirmed that the Libyan prisoner who returned to Libya from Italy was released after completing his sentence in Italy, and that his repatriation has nothing to do with the prisoner exchange agreement signed by Libya and Italy.

The embassy explained in a statement on its official Facebook page that the agreement had not entered into force.

The agreement is in the process of being ratified by the competent authority of the Italian side, it added.

However, the Ministry of Justice of the Government of National Unity said that the Libyan prisoner had arrived in Mitiga from Italy, after being repatriated in implementation of the prisoner exchange agreement signed by both countries.
