The Turkish Foreign Ministry has said that maintaining calm on the ground is critical to Libya's security, stability and future, calling on all parties to exercise self-restraint and stop the conflict immediately.

In a statement, the ministry stated that it is following up with "grave concern" the clashes in Tripoli, saying that it is necessary for Libya's stability, prosperity and security to hold fair and free national elections as soon as possible.

The ministry stressed that the escalation of violence threatens the determination of the Libyan people to achieve lasting peace and stability, and also jeopardizes the political process, especially the holding of elections, and urged all parties to resolve their differences peacefully.

The statement urged for speedy finalization of UN-facilitated legal framework for elections.

It stressed that Turkey would continue to stand "by the side of the Libyan brothers and to provide all kinds of support to establish enduring peace and stability."
