The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Special Envoy for the Western and Central Mediterranean Situation, Vincent Cochetel, welcomed the official deportation of 172 asylum-seekers to Niger, the first deportation of its kind in more than a year.

Cochetel added, on his Twitter account, that he was pleased with this development, which he considered more of a protective solution, calling for increased resettlement opportunities for all refugees who made the dangerous choice to enter Libya, as he put it.

The UNHCR had previously called on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to resume voluntary return flights for refugees, following monitoring violations and abuses against them in detention centers throughout the country.
