The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed concern over the increasing use of hate speech against refugees and migrants in the country, warning that media disinformation is fueling tensions.
In a statement, the mission reaffirmed its awareness of the Libyan authorities' commitment at both national and local levels to addressing public concerns.
It also stressed that its efforts to support migration management align with Libya’s national priorities while respecting its sovereignty.
UNSMIL cautioned that the spread of misinformation could escalate fear and hostility, urging all parties to ensure public discourse is grounded in facts and upholds human rights.
The warning comes amid social media claims suggesting that the Government of National Unity has signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration to resettle migrants in Libyan cities.
