The Criminal Court has convicted the leader of a criminal gang for deliberately trafficking illegal fuel off the coast of Zuwara city.

The court sentenced the defendant to six years and six months in prison and ordered him to repay around 113,549,821 Libyan dinars.

Additionally, he was deprived of his civil rights for the duration of the sentence and two years after its completion.

The Public Prosecutor's Office clarified Tuesday that investigations revealed the gang's deliberate smuggling of 165,669 litres of diesel fuel.

The fuel was received by foreign maritime transport vessels after facilitating their entry into territorial waters with the assistance of the gang members.
