rescue

SOS Méditerranée, based in Marseille in southern France, announced that it had “rescued 25 people off the coast of Libya.”

According to SOS, “the survivors rescued by the Ocean Viking ship, including five unaccompanied minors, three women and two children under four, are currently recovering and being cared for by teams from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and SOS Méditerranée on board the ship.”

"The distressed boat was spotted thanks to an alert issued by an ‘alarm phone’, a phone number called by immigrants who encounter difficulties when crossing the Mediterranean, and announced that the Italian authorities have designated Marina di Carrara (north of Pisa) as a safe port, 1,222 kilometers away.” It said.

It is noteworthy that “according to the latest figures issued by the International Organization for Migration, 247 people have been lost or killed in the Mediterranean Sea since the beginning of 2025 while trying to reach Europe, and in 2024, 2,360 immigrants were lost or drowned in the Mediterranean.”
