The Board of Directors of the Sudanese Al-Merrikh SC football club decided unanimously to dismiss Al-Siddiq, son of Khalifa Haftar, from the position of honorary president of the club.

The Board of Directors confirmed that its decision was unanimous because Al-Siddiq supports the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in their fight against the Sudanese army.

Al-Siddiq Haftar was appointed honorary president of Al-Merreikh SC in April of last year, in a move that sparked controversy, and Al-Merreikh fans at that time overwhelmingly rejected Haftar’s appointment, calling for the club to be kept away from politics.

The relations between Al-Merreikh SC and Haftar began when Benghazi hosted the club, whose stadium in Omdurman was not ready for the matches of the recent African Champions League competition.

Observers described the Sudanese club's move at the time as a means to obtain financial support from Haftar, as the latter's sons had recently spent millions of dinars to support several Libyan clubs in Libya's east and west.
