Amnesty International has condemned the entrenched impunity surrounding deaths in custody and other severe human rights violations committed by armed groups under the command of Khalifa Haftar.
The organization stated that this impunity has allowed Haftar's Internal Security Agency to intensify its crackdown on critics and political opponents in recent months, targeting politicians, activists, poets, and bloggers.
According to the organization, since January, heavily armed members of the Internal Security Agency have arrested dozens of individuals, including men and women in their seventies, from their homes, neighbourhoods, or public places in eastern and southern Libya, areas under Haftar's control.
Some detainees have been subjected to enforced disappearances for up to 10 months without being brought before civilian courts, allowed to challenge the legality of their detention, or formally charged with any crimes.
In April and July, two individuals died in custody under suspicious circumstances while being held at detention centres controlled by the Internal Security Agency in Benghazi and Ajdabiya.
Amnesty highlighted that no independent and impartial criminal investigations were conducted into their deaths, and no one has been held accountable.
These deaths add to the list of atrocities committed by the Internal Security Agency against those who dare to criticize the "Libyan Arab Armed Forces," according to the report.
