Amnesty International called on the Libyan authorities to immediately reveal the fate and whereabouts of deputy military prosecutor Farouq Ben Saeed, who had been forcibly disappeared since 26 June, amid fears that he was held for politically-motivated reasons by Al-Radaa (Deterrence) Apparatus for Fighting Terrorism and Organized Crime.
Amnesty International said that Ben Saeed's family lodged complaints with the police and prosecution authorities but received no information about his fate and whereabouts.
"There are credible reports that he is being held by the Deterrence Apparatus for Fighting Terrorism and Organized Crime, a state-backed militia notorious for committing gross human rights violations, including torture and other ill-treatment, raising fears for his safety and wellbeing." Amnesty International's report says.
Libyan Crime Watch has earlier said that three gunmen affiliated with Al-Radaa kidnapped Ben Saeed using civilian vehicles on June 26. It said that the 51-year-old man was kidnapped from the Bifi district of Tripoli while he was with his children, adding that he was lodged in Mitiga prison, and calling on the Government of National Unity and the Presidential Council to work on his immediate release and to hold the kidnappers to account.
