A source from Sirte said that an armed group stormed the site of the ancient city of Sultan, east of Sirte, a few days ago indicating that the armed group seized the site and prevented its employees from working.

The source indicated that the ancient city contained warehouses filled with thousands of artifacts dating back to the Islamic, Roman and African eras, and there is also a museum, and a small port.

It is noteworthy that the ancient city of Sultan is located within the scope of the Sultan Executive Council, 60 km east of the city of Sirte, and it is one of the largest ancient cities in Libya. The workers in the ancient city called on the competent authorities to preserve the area from sabotage.

While the source did not mention the affiliation of the armed group, the area from the city of Sirte in the east to the border with Egypt is under the control of Khalifa Haftar's forces, and it is likely that the armed group is affiliated with one of Haftar's security units.
