Several families have fled Derna in eastern Libya as the self-styled army of Khalifa Haftar has taken control of different neighborhoods and as clashes have intensified in areas controlled by Derna Security Force.

Tens of families were displaced from Bab Tobruk and Sahel areas that are controlled by Haftar’s forces, local sources reported, adding that looting, robberies and assaults on properties by Haftar’s forces were the reasons for the displacement.

The sources said that Haftar’s fighters are doing the same acts they did in Benghazi after they took control of it: looting, assaulting and burning houses and shops depending on tipoffs by informants or just out of vengeance.

Haftar’s forces are now in control of several areas under an air cover as part of the military operation that aimed at having a full grip on Derna.

Legal local and international organizations and the UN expressed concern over the deteriorated humanitarian situation in Derna, fearing revenge killings and damage of properties.
