‎The Congolese Foreign Minister, Jean-Claude Gakosso, said that the mission formed by the African Union in Libya was aimed at gaining support for the reconciliation pact drawn up by the Libyans themselves, which should be signed in principle during an official ceremony at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

Speaking about the results of the African delegation's visit to Tripoli a few days ago, the envoy of the President of the Congo, who chairs the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, believes that "the reconciliation process, even if it is very complex, has been relaunched."

Gakosso said that the goal was to pave the way for the next elections, after their failure in 2021, explaining: "We must certainly hold general elections. However, elections can be a source of violence."

He called for dealing with everyone, saying "We need patience and precision in choosing terms because any small thing can disrupt everything, and without being overly optimistic, I believe that the process is on the right track." He explained to Radio France Internationale on Monday: "This pact is in a way a code of conduct. We have completed the first step, and the second step will be to go to Benghazi, in a few weeks. We will look at each other's agendas, in anticipation of holding meetings with Khalifa Haftar and the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh."

A high-level delegation from the African Union, led by the current chair of the African Union, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and the President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, visited Tripoli on October 11 and 12, to try to mobilize support for the reconciliation file.

At the end of its mission, the African Union delegation announced that it would hold, as soon as possible, similar consultations with the authorities in Benghazi and other Libyan parties as a second phase complementary to its mission in Tripoli.

It seems that the location of the reconciliation conference is causing a Libya-Africa dispute following statements by the member of the Presidential Council responsible for managing the national reconciliation file, Abdullah Al-Lafi, who said in a statement that the national reconciliation conference scheduled to be held in the coming period “unless it is accomplished locally and within Libyan territory, it will be subject to criticism and disagreement among Libyans.”
