Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has called on the European Union to lift the long-standing ban on Libyan flights within EU airspace, emphasizing the potential impact on economic and social ties between Libya and Europe.
In a meeting with EU Ambassador Nicola Orlando in Tripoli, Dbeibeh urged swift, practical action to remove the ban and expressed Libya’s readiness to collaborate on meeting the required safety standards.
The discussion at the Cabinet headquarters also explored joint interests, including migration, alternative energy, and sustainable development. The leaders reviewed progress since Dbeibeh’s May visit to Brussels, reiterating Libya’s desire for stronger cooperation with the EU on a range of pressing issues.
Dbeibeh highlighted Libya’s recent hosting of the Mediterranean Migration Forum and its efforts to manage migration challenges, urging EU support in developing Libya’s infrastructure to address migrant flows.
The energy sector was another key focus, with Dbeibeh calling for EU collaboration on renewable energy initiatives, part of Libya’s drive toward a sustainable, diversified economy. He underlined that increased EU involvement in renewable energy projects would bolster development, create jobs, and help Libya reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, benefiting Libyan society as a whole.
