The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, stressed that "credible, inclusive and secure elections are the only way to break the political deadlock and end the cycle of transitional arrangements" in Libya, considering that they would put the country firmly on the path of unity, peace and national reconciliation, according to a post she published on her page on X platform.
DiCarlo, who began her visit to Libya on Sunday before the start of the UN General Assembly meetings, said that this message was what she emphasized during her meeting with Libyan leaders; Head of the Presidential Council, Muhammad Menfi, and the Council Deputy Heads, Mossa Al-Koni and Abdullah Al-Lafi, in addition to the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and the acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour.
DiCarlo explained that during her meeting with Dbeibah and Al-Baour, she expressed deep concern about the divisions in the country, the unilateral measures, the rapid deterioration in the political, economic and security situation, and the urgent need to resume the political process.
During her meeting with Menfi, Al-Lafi and Al-Koni, she stressed her support for the Presidential Council’s efforts to resolve the Central Bank crisis and promote rights-based national reconciliation, based on the principles of transitional justice.
DiCarlo praised the great efforts of the UN team working in Libya, as they briefed her on their work, including their response to the catastrophic floods in Derna and eastern Libya one year ago. She urged them to continue working together diligently to support all people in Libya.
