German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, has welcomed the statements made by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, and the Tobruk-based HoR Speaker Agilah Saleh, regarding declaring a ceasefire and cession of military operations across Libya.
"This is a significant move towards a political solution to the deadlock Libyan conflict”, Maas said in a statement on Friday, emphasizing the step must be followed by concrete action on the ground, by the Military Commission (5+5) to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire.
The German top diplomat opines that the step will also contribute towards ending the oil embargo and will bring fresh hope for the Libyan people, according to his statement.
He called on all parties involved in the conflict to work constructively towards implementing the points agreed upon, underscoring that his government will continue to actively engage for a political solution to the conflict.
Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj of the UN-backed (GNA) called on Friday for an immediate cease-fire in his side’s conflict, raising hopes that this would lay the ground for a political process.
