The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced postponing Libya elections that are supposed to be held on December 24, proposing the next January 24 as a new date for the vote, but stressing that the House of Representatives (HoR) is the entity entitled to set a new date for elections provided that it removes the force majeure on completing the election process.

The HNEC said the vote is delayed due to lack of necessary electoral legislation regarding judiciary role in appeals, which were a serious turning point in the process and had a negative effect on the right of the HNEC to defend its decisions.

It also indicated that the ongoing interference in politics and judicial rulings led to declaring force majeure and thus the inability to publish the final list of presidential candidates.

Regarding parliamentary elections, the HNEC said vetting the 5385 candidates' applications is at the final review stage, adding that the decision on publishing the preliminary list of parliamentary candidates will be announced after the end of vetting and then appeals can begin.
