A report by Human Rights Solidarity about the airstrikes on Derna showed that 71 civilians were either killed or injured, among whom there were 26 children.
The report was based on news reports published between June 20, 2014 (the date of the first strike on Derna in which 7 kids were injured in Ras Al-Hilal area) and August 01, 2016.
“26 out of 30 victims this year were injured or killed after April 20, which is the date of the retreat and defeat of IS militants from Derna’s suburbs.” The report reads.
The report also expected that the civilian casualties will increase due to the current assaults on residential areas especially that it registered 95% civilian casualties rate among the killed and injured in Derna, which shows that those who bomb Derna are careless about the safety of civilians.
“We urge the Presidential Council of the UN-proposed government to bear the responsibility of securing the civilians in Derna and to keep its promises to the city as per its statement of April 20, 2016, in addition to supporting Derna and its residents so that it recovers as a lively city.” Human Rights Solidarity wrote.
It also called for an immediate end of the airstrikes in the city and its outlying areas plus the immediate lifting of the siege that has deprived the city from foods, fuel and medicines.
