The Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has said that Rome plans to further strengthen cooperation with Libya and Tunisia to support the voluntary return of immigrants to their countries through the two countries in 2024.

Piantedosi explained that cooperation with Tunisia contributed to reducing migrant boats by an estimated 192% this year, indicating that a similar principle could be followed with Libya.

He added that Libya and Tunisia called several times for the creation of a project that can rely on European funding and the contribution of international humanitarian organizations. He pointed out that, apart from the climatic conditions that do not encourage the departure of immigrants, the Italian authorities have begun to see the effects of the cooperation agreements with Tunisia and Libya.

Piantedosi added that intensifying cooperation with Tunisia and Libya, as the main transit countries, creates more confidence that this trend is correct and through which the decrease in the number of immigrants can be confirmed next year.
