The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said on Twitter on Thursday that reports about fighting in the vicinity of Sirte are worrying, whether they have been caused by misjudgment or bad faith.
The UNSMIL tweeted “Libya doesn’t need new bloody battles but needs guns to be silenced and clashes avoided.”
The UN mission in Libya also warned the parties against consequences of “playing with fire” saying it would hold initiators responsible for the fighting in the vicinity of Sirte, adding that it will deal with them accordingly.
Likewise, the Presidential Council (PC) has condemned in the strongest terms the military escalation in Saddada town, saying it is an unjustifiable act that could plunge Libya in violence and chaos once again.
“The clashes in Saddada violate all the accords and ceasefire truces reached by all parties in the country. We are in a position that obliges us to pave the way for constitution referendum and then elections, such conflicts and clashes could hinder the democratic process which all Libyans care about.” The PC said in statement.
It also called on all parties to cease fire immediately and use the language of wisdom and reason in resolving issues so they can avoid Libyans bloodshed and destruction.
Khalifa Haftar's self-styled army forces attacked Wednesday Saddada Castle between Misrata and Bani Walid, claiming control of the area after brief clashes with forces inside the castle under the command of the former chief of Petroleum Facilities Guard, Ibrahim Jadran and Benghazi Defense Brigades.
According to sources from the area, the clashes left injuries and deaths with reports saying the injured fighters under Haftar's command were sent to Al-Jufra hospitals.
However, the Sirte Protection Force denied that Haftar's forces had seized the town, saying they had retreated to their positions.
