A small protest broke out in Tobruk on Saturday to reject and condemn rogue Gen. Khalifa Haftar’s attempt to found a military council to rule the country.
The protesters called for an army loyal only to the country and not to a person, with the role of protecting the country’s sovereignty and constitution, reiterating as well their utter rejection for any future role for military personnel in governing Libya.
They also called for realizing the 17 February principles that Tobruk city revolted for, establishing the state of law and peaceful handover of power.
The protest comes following a call by Haftar for his supporters to take to the streets on Monday and demand a military council to rule the state after October when the constitutionally specified term for Tobruk parliament expires.
His supporters have already started distributing leaflets calling for a demonstration in Ein Marah, a town between Al-Qubbah and Derna.
Some reports say that Khalifa Haftar is trying to undermine the ongoing efforts for a peaceful solution to the Libyan political crisis. If Libyan rivals agreed to establish the government of national unity, Haftar would lose hope to repeat the Egyptian scenario and establish his military council.
