Yasar Guler

The Turkish Defense Minister, Yasar Guler, said that "there is no solution in Libya without Türkiye," adding that Ankara "wants to establish one Libyan army."

Guler defended his country's sending of military forces to Libya, saying in an interview with the Turkish channel "Habar", on Saturday that those forces were sent "in response to the call of the legitimate government recognized by the United Nations."

The Turkish Defense Minister said that his country's presence had created a balance in Libya and contributed to launching the political track, adding that "everyone knows the goals of the presence of other countries in Libya. They are different from Türkiye's."

Guler said Ankara was committed to continuing its activities in Libya based on the slogan "Libya is for Libyans."

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last Tuesday that his country had proven its pivotal role in bringing peace to Libya after it supported the legitimate government, in reference to the former Government of National Accord headed by Fayez Al-Sarraj, who asked for Turkish intervention to help thwart the aggression by Khalifa Haftar against Tripoli in 2019.

Turkey and the former Government of National Accord signed two memoranda of understanding regarding maritime demarcation and security and military cooperation on November 27, 2019, which allowed Ankara to give military support to the government in Tripoli.
