A section of a war tug, sunk in the Sirte Port basin during NATO-led airstrikes in 2011, has been successfully salvaged after 13 years underwater, officials confirmed.
Khaled Youssef, the Director of the Media Office at the Sirte Free Zone, announced the operation on Friday, highlighting the complex engineering work undertaken by the project team.
Using advanced underwater techniques, workers dismantled the 290-ton tug into four parts to enable a safe and efficient recovery.
Three parts, including the largest section measuring 16.5 meters, have been retrieved so far. The salvaged portion housed six engines weighing 20 tons each and 10 fuel tanks, which were carefully drained before extraction.
This operation follows the successful recovery of another war tug from the same port in previous years, marking significant progress in clearing the remnants of Libya's 2011 conflict.
