The Head of the Libyan Football Federation (LFF), Abdulhakim Al-Shalmani, said that the LFF had agreed with the national team coach, Serbian Milutin Sredojević (Micho), to renew his contract for an additional 16 months.
This came in a press conference held by Al-Shalmani at the Hilton Hotel in Rome on Friday, in the presence of the Serbian coach. Micho's contract with Libya was set to expire next September, but after renewal, the contract will expire in January 2026.
In October 2023, the LFF signed Micho to lead the national team for a year, and with him the results began to improve, as the team played 13 friendly and official matches, beating Mauritius, Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Kuwait, Sudan, Liberia and Indonesia. The team tied in four matches, in friendlies against Togo, Niger, Somalia and Cameroon, and suffered one loss against Cape Verde.
It is noteworthy that Micho receives a salary of 27.000 dollars a month. The renewal decision comes with Micho, who was thinking of leaving the Libyan national team due to the limited time for Libya to prepare for the 2025 African Cup qualifiers, which Morocco will host from December 21, 2025 until January 18, 2026.
The Knights of the Mediterranean will begin their qualifiers' campaign next September, as the draw placed them in the fourth group, which also includes the teams of Nigeria, Rwanda, and Benin. The first and second of the group will qualify for AFCON.
Meanwhile, Micho said in the press conference, it was time to develop a clear plan for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. He added that he chose to be part of Libyan football, and that the role of the media was important to support his plan to develop the national team.
Micho has indicated that he has three main goals or promises, the first of which is to play in the 2025 AFCON , the second is to play in the African Cup of Nations for local players (CHAN), and the third is to work on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
