71 people were killed in the southern Libyan city of Sabha over the past three months, the city’s Police Directorate revealed on Monday, adding that 32 others were abducted during the same period.

Releasing crime statistics for the months of January, February and March 2017, Sabha Police Directorate said 126 cars were also stolen. It clarified that the rising crime rates in the city are due to inaction of security institutions and their failure to perform their duties.

“Among the reasons are absence of judiciary and prosecution, closure of prisons since 2014, absence of religious and national motivation, and spread of tribal ignorance,” it added.

In March, 14 people were reported abducted. Among those was a Turkish national identified as “Mustafa Kashi İhsanoğlu.” The Police Directorate said his captors had chopped his finger off and sent it to his wife and forced her to pay the ransom, which value was not disclosed.

3 Libyans, 6 Egyptians, 2 Sudanese and 2 Chadian were also abducted in March, the Police Directorate reported.
